"You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its saltiness, how will it become salty again? It’s good for nothing except to be thrown away and trampled under people’s feet." – Matthew 5:13 (CEB)
Have you ever eaten a french fry with no salt? It is pretty boring. Salt changes everything. It brings out the best flavors in our food. In the time of Jesus, salt was also used to keep meat from going bad. It was very valuable.
When Jesus calls us the "salt of the earth," He is giving us a big job. He means that we are supposed to bring out the best in the world around us. We are here to keep goodness alive and stop bad things from spreading.
But Jesus also gives a warning. He asks what happens if salt loses its salty flavor. Can it be salty again? No. If salt is not salty, it is useless. It just gets thrown out on the walking path.
Sometimes, it is easy to blend in with the world. We stop standing out. We hide our faith because we want to fit in. When we do this, we lose our "saltiness." The Holy Spirit lives inside of us to give us the power to be different. God wants us to step into our schools, our jobs, and our homes and change the flavor of the room. He wants us to show His love and truth.
Where in your life do you need to start being "salty" again?
