17 God, you have taught me since I was young, and I am still telling about your wondrous deeds. 18 So even when I’m old and gray, God, don’t abandon me until I tell the next generation about your strength, and those who come along about your power. - Psalm 71:17-18 (CEB)
In the church, we often celebrate dramatic turnaround stories. We love to hear about the person who lived a life of deep rebellion, hit rock bottom, and then experienced a sudden, radical transformation by the grace of God. Those testimonies are incredible, and they show the mighty power of Jesus to rescue people from darkness.
But this week for My Story Monday, we are looking at a different kind of miracle. We are listening to the story of a man in our congregation who has followed Jesus Christ for as long as he can remember. He grew up in the church, learned the scriptures as a child, and never had a moment where he completely walked away from the faith.
Sometimes, people who grow up in the church feel like their story is "boring" because it lacks a dramatic rescue moment. But a lifelong walk with God is actually a beautiful display of His preserving grace. To be protected from deep paths of destruction from an early age is a massive blessing. As the psalmist writes, there is an incredible beauty in being able to say, "God, you have taught me since I was young."
A lifelong faith does not mean a perfect faith, though. The brother sharing his story openly admits that he has slipped here and there along the way. We all make mistakes, struggle with doubt, or let the busyness of life distract us from the Holy Spirit. Stumbling is a part of the human experience.
The real challenge of a lifelong faith is not about being flawless. It is about perseverance. When this brother slipped, he did not run away from God. Instead, he allowed God's mercy to pick him up, dust him off, and set his feet back on the path of righteousness. His story challenges us to reframe how we look at success in the Christian life. True faithfulness is a daily decision to keep choosing Jesus, day after day, year after year, through every season of life. Whether you have followed Him for five minutes or fifty years, His arms are always open to welcome you back when you lose your way.
No matter what your spiritual story looks like, your journey matters to this community. If you want to talk about your faith, share your struggles, or learn more about walking daily with Jesus, let's connect. Call Pastor Vic @ 509-919-1897 to set up a time to chat.
Reflection Question: Do you ever feel like your testimony isn't "dramatic" enough to matter? How can you celebrate the quiet ways God has preserved and protected your heart over the years?
A Prayer for the Week: Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of Your preserving grace. Thank You for being a faithful guide through every single season of my life. Holy Spirit, when I stumble or slip, please give me the courage to turn back to Your embrace instead of hiding in shame. Lord, I need Your strength to overcome _______________ this week. Help me to live a life that points the next generation toward Your enduring power. Amen.
