Imagine two people who decide to build identical houses. From the outside, once they are finished, the homes look exactly the same. They have the same paint, the same windows, and the same beautiful front doors. If you walked by, you wouldn’t be able to tell a single difference between them.

But a house is only as good as what is underneath it.

Jesus told a story about this to wrap up his most famous talk. He said:

Matthew 7:24-27 (CEV) "Anyone who hears my words and obeys them is wise like a man who builds his house on solid rock. The rain poured down, the rivers flooded, and the winds beat against that house. But it did not fall, because it was built on solid rock.

Anyone who hears my words and does not obey them is foolish like a man who builds his house on sand. The rain poured down, the rivers flooded, and the winds beat against that house. And it fell with a terrible crash."

Notice that the exact same storm hit both houses. The rain didn't skip the wise man's house, and the floods didn't spare the foolish man's home. In this life, the storms come for everyone. Hard times, unexpected losses, and seasons of deep confusion happen to all of us.

The difference isn't the storm. The difference is the foundation.

When everything is sunny, sand feels just as steady as rock. It's easier to dig into, it's faster to build on, and it looks great. Sand represents the shifting ideas of the world around us—opinions that change with the wind, shortcuts that promise quick happiness, or trying to look perfect on the outside while ignoring the inside.

But Jesus says truth isn't a shifting opinion. Truth is a person, and His words are a solid rock. Building your life on Him doesn't mean your life will be storm-free. It means that when the sky goes black, the rivers rise, and the winds scream, the structure of your life will not collapse. You are held by something deeper than the chaos.

A Simple Conversation with God: God, sometimes it feels so much easier to build my life on what looks quick, fast, and popular right now. When the storms hit, I quickly realize how shaky that sand really is. Help me to anchor my thoughts, my choices, and my worth in Your words. Today, I specifically want to talk to You about...
