“You are like light for the whole world. A city built on top of a hill cannot be hidden, and no one would light a lamp and put it under a clay pot. A lamp is placed on a lampstand, where it can give light to everyone in the house. Make your light shine, so that others will see the good that you do and will praise your Father in heaven.” ~ Matthew 5:14-16 (CEV)
Have you ever felt completely exhausted from trying to carry a heavy burden all by yourself? When life gets dark and stressful, it is easy to feel like one tiny candle fighting against a strong wind, worried that your flame might blow out at any moment. But we were never created to face the dark alone.
In the Bible, Jesus looked out at a hillside packed with tired, everyday working people. He saw fishermen with worn hands, busy parents, and laborers who had worked long hours under the hot sun. He knew they were weary. Yet, looking into their eyes, He made an incredible statement: “You are like light for the whole world.”
Notice that little word: You. In the language Jesus spoke, that word was plural. He wasn't pointing at one spiritual superhero and telling them to fix everything. He was speaking to the entire group. In everyday English, Jesus was saying: “Y'all are the light.”
Think about the difference between a single candle and a whole town on a ridge. A lone spark in the pitch-black night can only light up the floor right around your feet, and a quick breeze can blow it out in a second. But when homes all across a hilltop turn on their lamps together, those tiny lights merge into a blazing beacon that cuts through miles of darkness.
That is what happens when we walk together. When your flame flickers, the people standing next to you help shield you from the wind. When your heart feels tired and cold, the warmth of someone else’s faith helps spark your hope back to life. Faith is not a solo effort; it is a shared journey. We don't even have to manufacture the light on our own—Jesus is the true light, and together, our lives simply reflect His love so everyone can find their way home.
This week, stop trying to fight your battles in isolation. Reach out to a Christian friend, pastor, or small group, share one honest worry you have been carrying alone, and invite them to pray with you so your flames can strengthen each other.
Prayer: "God, thank You for never expecting me to shine alone; today, I need Your help to step out of isolation and..."
