After Jesus had finished speaking, one of the guests said, “The greatest blessing of all is to be at the banquet in God's kingdom!”
Jesus told him: A man once gave a great banquet and invited a lot of guests. When the banquet was ready, he sent a servant to tell the guests, “Everything is ready! Please come.”
8One guest after another started making excuses. The first one said, “I bought some land, and I've got to look it over. Please excuse me.”
Another guest said, “I bought five teams of oxen, and I need to try them out. Please excuse me.”
Still another guest said, “I've just now married, and I can't be there.”
The servant told his master what happened, and the master became so angry he said, “Go as fast as you can to every street and alley in town! Bring in everyone who is poor or paralyzed or blind or lame.”
When the servant returned, he said, “Master, I've done what you told me, and there is still plenty of room for more people.”
His master then told him, “Go out along the back roads and make people come in, so my house will be full. Not one of the guests I first invited will get even a bite of my food!”
Luke 14:15-24
Have you ever felt like you weren't "good enough" to be invited to a really special event? Maybe you thought you didn't have the right clothes, the right connections, or the right background. In a powerful story Jesus told, a man throws a massive, fancy party and invites all the important people. But when the time comes, they all make excuses. They are too busy with their work, their purchases, and their own lives to come.
So, the host does something shocking. He tells his servant to go out into the streets and alleys to find the people no one else notices—the poor, the hurting, and the lonely. He doesn't care about their status; he just wants his house to be full.
This story tells us something amazing about God. He isn't looking for "perfect" people who have it all together. He is looking for hungry hearts. He invites us to His table not because we earned a seat, but because He wants us there. Sometimes we get so busy with our own "important" stuff that we miss out on the best thing God has for us. But the invitation is always open. The Master is still saying, "Come, there is still room."
This week, catch yourself making an excuse. If you feel a nudge to pray, read your Bible, or help someone, don't say, "I'm too busy right now." Stop in that moment, set aside the distraction, and say "Yes" to God's invitation.
"God, thank You that there is always room for me at Your table; today, help me to stop making excuses and..."
